A 200 year-old live oak in Mandeville is now at risk of being cut down as part of a judgement against the City Of Mandeville. Other surrounding oaks could be in danger as well. Despite the feasibility of alternative plans that would preserve the trees, the project now being considered requires the removal of a 200 year old oak tree and possibly damaging other live oaks as well.
This project results from litigation against the City Of Mandeville, where the court issued a ruling against the city. It wasn’t until the final stage of planning that the cities engineers decided to call for the removal of a 200 year old live oak tree.
Live oaks are heavily protected by state and local ordinances that prohibit their removal. Coincidently, this spring, the city enacted more ordinances to protect these trees . Yet in this case, the trees destruction is due to convenience, not necessity.
This isn’t just about one tree. It’s about:
- Preserving our environment
- Respecting private property
- Challenging wasteful or short-sighted development
- Protecting Louisiana’s unique natural heritage
Help us raise awareness and demand smarter, more responsible actions from the City of Mandeville. that don’t require the loss of irreplaceable natural landmarks. Together, we can stand up for this tree, and all other live oaks in this city.
